The Area

"La Vieille Forge" is situated on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Vijon, Indre, where the Loire Valley (the valley of French fairy-tale castles) meets the volcanic region of Auvergne (famous for its mineral waters and dramatic landscapes), in the beautiful, colourful Berry countryside of gentle hills and vigorous, sparkling rivers, where lusciously green fields are punctuated by the pale gold and russet of the Limousin cows, characteristic of this region.

Inextricably associated with the great novels of the 19th century writer George Sand, who was born here and populated her writing with the landscapes and people of the area, this unique part of France offers the possibility of a holiday immersed in nature and punctuated by physical activities (water sports and canoeing, rambling and cycling; visits to gardens and natural parks), as well as imbued with history, art and culture (châteaux, churches, museums, archaeological remains). Or you can visit one of the villages that claim to be the centre of France (there are more than one, of course!)Or you may just prefer a quiet and relaxing time soaking up the sun in the beautiful garden of "La Vieille Forge" or enjoying the excellent wine, tasty cheese and rich country food that can be found everywhere.
